Treatment for Arm Pain | Abq

There are many potential causes of arm pain.  Maybe you lifted too heavy at the gym or carry around a growing child.  You may have overdone it on the tennis court or while playing golf.

Common Causes:

The cause of your arm pain may also be something a little less obvious.  Nerve impingement in the neck or aggravation of muscles/fascia in the neck or shoulder can radiate into the arm.  Many of these issues can quickly and easily be detected with proper testing.

Less Common Causes:

While muscle strains and repetitive stress injuries often top the list for arm woes, a hidden cast of characters lurks behind uncommon causes of arm pain. One culprit might be thoracic outlet syndrome, where nerves or blood vessels get squeezed between your collarbone and first rib, leading to tingling, weakness, and even fainting.

Cervical radiculopathy, a pinched nerve in your neck, can mimic heart attack symptoms like shooting pain down your arm and into your chest. If the cold sends your arm into agony, cryoglobulinemia, a rare blood disorder, might be the culprit.

Paget’s disease, a bone disorder, can weaken and thicken arm bones, causing fractures and excruciating pain. And sometimes, even medication side effects, like those from cholesterol drugs or antibiotics, can manifest as aching arms.

This diverse troupe highlights the importance of consulting a doctor when your arm pain takes an unexpected turn – you might just encounter a medical mystery in need of unraveling.

In short, keep an eye out for:

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Cervical radiculopathy
  • Cryoglobulinemia
  • Paget’s disease
  • Medication side effects

Remember, if the pain is severe, worsening, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Pain in the Wrist and Hand

Wrist and Hand pain can also be complicated to pin down.  Similar to the arm, these can stem either from a local source or be referred from above.  Issuers in the wrist and hand are often due to repetitive stress but can also result from trauma.

A car accident, for example, can cause a wrist sprain from where you where grasping the steering wheel at the time of impact.  If you sustained more significant injuries in the neck or low back, you may not even notice that your hand or wrist is injured for some time.

Another common cause is catching yourself during a slip and fall.  Unfortunately, this becomes more common as we age and struggle more with balance.

We will treat the discomfort that you are experiencing through a combination of massage, chiropractic, and possibly physical therapy modalities.  We will also work with you to strengthen, loosen, or otherwise calm the area through a comprehensive home routine.
